When we first picked up a pen or pencil and started making marks on paper, we began with line! Yes, thats the second things which comes after a dot! A contour drawing shows the outline , silhouette, edges , shape of the subject, but it deducts the fine details, surface textures, colour and tone of the same. But, the beauty lies in this imperfection of the art form!

The main role of the contour drawing is to focus on the mass and volume of the subject and not the minor detailing. It solely focuses attention on the shape and proportions. Contour drawings can also be helpful for the people who needs to work faster but keeping in mind to still maintain the clear and crisp depiction of the subject.

Contour drawing is any image or form of art which consists distinct straight or curved lines placed against a background. There is no gradations in the shade or hue of colour.
