A Behavior Study of Intimacy in Green Spaces

How intimacy is practiced in the green spaces of an urban city, in a space that is potentially the most exposed space in a given context.

What drives this show of emotion?

Who practices this intimacy?

How is it received?

How is it portrayed?

The study was conducted at Lodhi Gardens, by the researcher over a period of four weeks, on both weekdays and weekends, to map the peak times, ebb and flow of this behaviour. Extensive mapping of the garden and the heritage monuments there and how people behave in different niches of the same space.

With the whole political, cultural and societal aversion to Public Display of Affection in India, how is it that people openly show and practice intimacy on such democratic display.

After an extensive study, questions such as:

Do users behave according to a space, or does a space define the function of a user?

Why is it only a certain demographic of people practice this open Display of Affection? Are the others not in love, or are they culturally trained not to practice it?

Is there an economic, social or class difference that defines this user group?

Is it a certain connotation that gets associated with spaces, that encourage people to behave in a certain way?

Do we design spaces or do spaces design us?
